Effective Career Transitions - February 9, 2023

Making an effective career transition between private practice, government or an in-house role requires careful planning and preparation in order to ensure that you are a strong candidate. Our speakers will be discussing their unique career transitions as mid and senior level lawyers and what prepared them for their new roles. We will be joined by three speakers:

Sarah Malik (Crown Counsel at Public Prosecution Service of Canada)
Fariya Walji (Incoming Senior Director, Law Practice Program (LPP), Toronto Metropolitan University - formerly Ryerson University)
Emily Larose (Vice President Regulatory & General Counsel at Electrical Safety Authority).

This event is being offered as both a limited capacity in-person event, and as a virtual presentation.

Attendees will be given an opportunity to pose questions to our speakers.

Supplementing Your Practice - February 8, 2022

Finding ways to supplement your practice can set you up for success in a new area of law, or help you pivot into an alternative career. Our speakers will be discussing their certifications, the time and cost commitment involved in pursuing each of them, and the types of clients that their designations best serve. We will be hearing from:

Meghan O'Neil of Mills & Mills LLP and her role as an estates administration lawyer and TEP (Trust and Estate Practitioner);

Lorisa Stein and her role as a family lawyer, mediator, voice of the child, and business enterprise specialist;

Sherif Rizk and his role as a Certified Fraud Examiner and civil law degree holder;

Gokul Kamaraj and his role in an alternative career in law as a senior manager in anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist funding with Scotiabank; and

Madeline Ntoukas on the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation and her experience working as claims counsel.

In partnership with the Law Society of Ontario, this event is geared towards assisting law students, articling students and new lawyers in finding their first job.
Our main points of focus include; how to look for employment opportunities, get noticed, interview effectively, and succeed in your role once hired.
Our speakers include Law Society of Ontario Treasurer Teresa Donnelly who will be discussing what resources and supports the Law Society has to offer you, as well as Titilayo Desbiens, who is the Director of Human Resources at Zensurance.
Our WLAO hosts Madeline Ntoukas and Veronica Blanco Sanchez will share their first hand experiences with navigating the Toronto and Ottawa employment markets.

WLAO Young Lawyers Chapter Mentoring Event: Beyond the Firm

The WLAO Young Lawyers Chapter invites you to join them at their summer mentoring program. Have your questions answered by lawyers with many years of experience. The event will be held at the Maezo Restaurant on June 24th from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to rotate through multiple speed-mentoring sessions in small groups, and later, meet and mingle with a variety of accomplished lawyers from diverse practice areas.
