The Women’s Law Association of Ontario (WLAO) joins the legal community in expressing alarm and outrage regarding the alleged assault and detention of criminal defence lawyer Sudine Riley by uniformed officers at the Oshawa courthouse on January 23, 2026. Such disturbing conduct, if substantiated, represents an appalling breach of the safety and dignity that every member of the Bar is entitled to in their workplace.
Our justice system cannot credibly serve the public if racialized and female lawyers fear harassment or violence while carrying out their duties. WLAO echos the widespread calls for an independent, fair, and transparent investigation into this incident. We urge all justice institutions to take immediate and meaningful action to address systemic racism and to ensure the safety and respect of all lawyers, particularly those who have historically faced disproportionate harm.
